Why Giving Back Matters & Where To Start
Efforts to support the unhoused community are often rooted in generosity, but are not always structured for genuine impact. With record highs of the unhoused population ever recorded, primarily driven by housing prices, low incomes, unexpected job loss, and economic factors outside of individuals' control, now is the time to create structured support systems, built around what our communities really need.
In addition to housing prices and the lack of low-income housing driving the sudden increase in the unhoused population; social stigmas, discriminatory policies, inequitable support, and decreasing support from federal and state services causes historically marginalized communities to be disproportionately impacted. A major contributing factor to the homeless population is that 20% of all children aging out of the foster care system go directly into homelessness, and 31% - 46% experience homelessness, at least once, by age 26. Thats 5,000 - 6,000 kids a year.
And while yes, it's true that most Americans are one crisis away from experiencing homelessness themselves, that's exactly why it's important to do what we can to give back while we are in a position to do so. Whether you're choosing to volunteer, hosting a charity event, or donating to a cause, each small action builds the kind of community willing and able to support you, if or when that time ever comes.
Instead of ruminating on, or ignoring, the terrible things we see everyday, we can act and make a difference, starting within our own communities, which ultimately aids in our well-being, personal development, and further development of values related to human rights and social justice. The first step is realizing you want to help (if you're reading this, you're already there), and the next is figuring out the how. Ask yourself, “What would actually be useful and how can I get my community involved."
"You are not an innocent bystander if there is something you can do to help others in need, and actively choose to turn away. Ignorance is not innocence." - Rae Taylor
The good news for you is that we here at Everything Efficiency figured out a way to create community, give-back, and have fun all at once. We've created a way to build over 200 care-kits for the unhoused population, and are giving you everything you need, so that you can do it for your community too. Everything you need is below!

What Goes Into The Care Kits (Links Included)
In our Give Back Girls Day model, there are three ways people can get involved: they can volunteer their time and participate in building the care kits, they can donate funds towards or purchase an item from the wishlist, or they can share the wishlist with their virtual and in-person communities (or our personal favorite, all of the above)!
We recommend creating a gift registry on Amazon for your wishlist, so that items can be shipped directly to whoever is planning to host, making set-up and prep much easier down the line. Once your registry has been created, come back here and click the links below to add what you'd like to your Amazon registry.
To make the amount of kits listed at the top of each category, wish for the amount listed within the parenthesis (2, 5, 10, etc.) before each item.

Free Ways to Get Your Community Involved
The most important part of a community event is, you guessed it, the community. Most people want to help others, but it's often too difficult to figure out where to start.
The first and probably most effective way to get the community involved is to let them know about it! For the people to donate, you'll need to share your cause and provide a fast way for people to donate or contribute. Place mini stacks by registers at popular businesses in your area, place medium flyers around apartment buildings, and place full size flyers on community bulletin boards.
Use these three easy steps to create your own event flyers:
Once your wishlist has been created, turn your wishlist link into a QR code using Canva, any free QR code generator online
Download our donation flyers below, and add your QR code in the free spaces for each
Then print, cut along the dotted lines and distribute!

Putting The Care Kits Together
Each kit will be put together, by hand, by you and your volunteers. Below is everything that goes into each category. Don't worry about taking notes, we've made printable instructions to show what goes into each kit for your volunteers.
View, download and print the instructions for your event below. Set each instructions page at the associated designated area to build the care kits as efficiently as possible.

Once your kits have been put together, my favorite way to distribute them is to put the boxes in the trunk of a car and hand them out one by one, letting people choose what they need. Distributing the kits this way offers a chance for dignity and respect, small conversations, and human connection in a way that most people in this situation need.
Alternatively, drop the kits off at locations able to do the same, such as homeless shelters or womens and childrens shelters near you.
Summary
Whether you're putting together one, multiple, or all of the various care kits, you'll be giving back to your community in one of the most overlooked and necessary ways. Making one small move at a time, is what ends up creating the kind of community you're proud to live in.
We all need a little bit of help sometimes, but to make sure that our community will be there for us when we need it, we need to step up and help others while we can. Even if it's expensive, uncomfortable, or unrealistic, community isn't built from convenience, it's built from compounding effort.
One small action makes a bigger difference than you think, and the way our Give Back Girls Day is set up, each small action helps over 50 people. We encourage you to share this post, host an event of your own, and to continue doing what you can, not only to build the community you want, but also the future you want.
